Hod House - Hod O'Brien

Hod O'Brien is relatively unknown in the jazz world in general, having not recorded a great deal, but he's undeniably one of the giants of the music. He was a member of Oscar Pettiford's quintet (along with Red Rodney on trumpet) in the 1950's, replacing Bill Evans. After this stint with Pettiford, O’Brien joined up with tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose in a band which included Elvin Jones and Wilbur Ware. During this period in New York, he played with a galaxy of jazz stars, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Ornette Coleman, 'Philly' Joe Jones, Chet Baker, Pepper Adams, and Tom Harrell. I was very fortunate to do a UK tour with him, during which we recorded this: Hod's line based on 'What Is This Thing Called Love' live at Dempsey's Jazz Club in Cardiff, featuring Hod on piano, Steve Fishwick, trumpet, Giorgos Antoniou on bass, and Steve Brown on drums (and me). Due for release soon!
